Research Associate (2006-2007) Raytheon Polar Services – Experience Antarctica
Seeking a unique adventure as well as employment? How would you like to be one of the few people on the planet to have the opportunity to live and work in Antarctica? Raytheon Polar Services is the primary contractor for the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) U.S. Antarctic Program. We are currently looking for Research Associates to deploy to the McMurdo, South Pole or Palmer Antarctic research stations on a contract basis beginning in August of 2006.
There are three lengths for the contracts: Summer-August or October through February, Winter-February through October, and Year-Long-October through October. We are looking for Primary and Alternate employees to fill all contract positions. The Primary is first in line for the position. The Alternate is next in line to deploy should the Primary be unable to meet deployment requirements.

Responsibilities:
The Research Associate is responsible for operation, maintenance, and repair of commercial and prototype equipment and instrumentation in support of a variety of astronomy and physics projects and of longer-term remote sensing, GIS, geophysics and atmospheric science projects.

Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, or other engineering, and t wo years of laboratory or observatory technical work.   Laboratory or observatory technical work should include operational experience utilizing experimental physical, optical, or atmospheric science equipment .   A background in an academic research environment providing direct support to science projects is highly desirable. Operational knowledge of Windows 95/NT, Macintosh, Solaris or other UNIX platforms required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
All contract positions include competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package. For the time you are in Antarctica compensation also includes travel to and from the ice, room & board, and you are eligible for a performance-based bonus upon successful completion of your contract. FYI – Only authorized personnel are allowed on station and you need to remain on station for the duration of your contract except in case of emergency.
