Plug the power of science into public policy…become a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow! Since 1973, nearly 2,000 scientists and engineers have contributed their analytical skills to policymaking in Washington, DC, while learning about the role of science in the federal government. Career-enhancing opportunities are available in approximately 30 Congressional offices and 15 federal agencies through six fellowship areas:
• Congressional
• Diplomacy
• Energy, Environment, Agriculture & Natural Resources
• Global Stewardship
• Health, Education & Human Services
• National Defense & Global Security
The fellowships are year-long opportunities, beginning 1 September and ending 31 August. Most executive branch fellowships can be renewed for a second year.
Eligibility & Criteria
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (MD, DVM, etc.), in any physical, biological, medical, or social science, or any field of engineering. Applicants with a master’s degree in any engineering field plus three years of post-degree professional experience also qualify. US citizenship is required.
Support
Annual stipends will range from $68,000 to $88,000 for the 2008-2009 fellowship year (depending on years of post-degree professional experience). Most Fellows receive a relocation allowance, health insurance reimbursement, and a travel allowance. AAAS provides extensive placement support, an eight-day intensive orientation, and a year-long program of professional development activities that include monthly seminars, training workshops, networking gatherings, and a year-end retreat.
